Visualization: The Blueprint for Your Best Self (SOP 1.05)

When I decided to write down my principles for a disciplined life in The SOPs of Vitality, one truth stood out: You can’t hit a target you can’t see. I learned this the hard way during my transformation from “Fat Dan,” and I live it today by continually defining the next challenge.

The real work of fitness—or any area of life—doesn’t start with the body; it starts in the mind. Visualization is the process of creating a clear, mental blueprint of your future self. It strengthens focus, reinforces motivation, and provides the direction that vague hopes cannot. I use it to train my mind before I ever step foot in the gym.

The Power of the Vision Board: From 8% to 7.8%

At the dawn of 2024, my family and I all worked on vision boards. My board was a collage of goals—fitness, family, and personal ambition.

One image stood out: a silhouette of a man holding a barbell over his head with “8%” next to it. That number was my goal for my body fat percentage at the time. It was a clear, precise target.

For nearly two years, that board sat in my room, a constant, passive visual cue of the goal. I didn’t stare at it every day, but it was always there, programming my subconscious. My brain’s internal radar, the Reticular Activating System (RAS), was constantly hunting for proof and opportunities to make that image real.

Two years after making that vision board, I had my physical and my body fat officially came in at 7.8%.

That achievement proved something profound to me: you must clearly define your goals in detail, write them down in the present tense, and keep them visible. This is how you turn a dream into a plan you can execute daily.

How to Build Your Vision and Anchor Your Goals

Visualization isn’t a magical act; it’s a deliberate practice of discipline. It is about aligning your daily choices—your workouts, your meals, your energy—with the destiny you’ve already pictured.

Here is how you can implement this practice today, based on SOP 1.05:
